Google Chromebooks for Students

At Kingsdown School we champion each and every student - something that means that we must ensure we are preparing all students for their futures, whatever that might look like. One of our greatest challenges in doing this is that we are currently preparing our students for jobs that don’t even exist yet, using technologies that haven’t been invented in order to solve problems that we haven’t even encountered yet. Current estimates suggest that our students will have between 10-14 different jobs by the time they are 38. In 1984, there were just 1,000 internet devices in the world, when our year 11s were born this has risen to 1 billion and today, this estimate is in excess of 31 billion. This year, across the world we will generate more data than in the previous 5,000 years.

We are highly committed to providing the best education possible for our students and to be agile enough for our students to respond to what the world throws at us to ensure uninterrupted learning.  We will provide access to resources that will stretch and challenge our students and to develop skills useful in employment and further education.

We have seen, from the recent lockdown, how crucial to learning it is for all students to have access to a device that allows them to easily, and quickly access the wealth of information and resources that Kingsdown students have access to when in school.

In order to support this, our ambition is for every student at Kingsdown School to have a Chromebook. With will start with our year 11 students in September and follow with years 7 and 10 in January 2021. All remaining cohorts will be introduced from September 2021. A Chromebook is a small and lightweight laptop which runs using a Google Chrome operating system.  The device will significantly enhance the learning experience for our students both in the classroom and at home.  It further supports individualised learning and feedback and comes with access to a vast range of high quality resources that will supplement, but not replace the normal high quality teaching that Kingsdown prides itself on delivering.

Each Chromebook is designed to last 8- 10 hours per charge so will last all day, and has a life expectancy of at least 5 years.

Please don’t worry, handwriting remains a very important and valuable skill and there will of course be plenty of opportunity to continue to perfect this. Students will also continue to read and use books and textbooks, we have a thriving library and continue to develop our reading programmes. 

We are committed to ensuring all students have access to a Chromebook and we have a variety of options to suit all situations. 

Our options range from buying the device outright to day loans.

Option A is to buy the Chromebook outright, the cost is a single payment of approx. £220, we include a FREE protective sleeve with this option.

Option B is payment by instalments at approx £20 per month over 12 months which includes the cost of the Chromebook, a protective sleeve and the instalment admin fees charged by Parentpay, the total cost is approx £240

For our Y11 students, the cost will be approx. £30 per month over 8 months due to their limited remaining time left at the school.

With options A and B, once your child has completed year 11, the IT team will remove their management software and you will keep the Chromebook as it is your purchased device. For all other options, once your child has completed year 11 the device will be returned to school as the device is owned by the school.

Purchasing the device means you get a high quality Chromebook for an unbelievable price ready for use for College and beyond!

Option C is to rent the device during term time.  You will pay approx £110 deposit upfront, and rent of approx £22 will be taken from the deposit each year, the devices must be handed in during the summer holidays then reissued.

Option D is our no cost option – the day loan, students will sign out a Chromebook at the beginning of the day and return it at the end of the day.

The final option is to use your own device, if you already have your own Chromebook you are permitted to use this at school and we can add the Google Licence to the device to enable you to access the full range of educational services. 

The Chromebooks are fully supported by our in house IT Team of experts. To offer you peace of mind, each device is installed with appropriate Web filtering and monitoring software, and it can be locked and located as required.
We will update with more detailed information about the Chromebooks as the rollout begins from September, but hope you are as excited as we are about this innovative and fresh way of learning.

General specifications of school issued Chromebooks

While details are subject to change, we are generally looking at chromebooks with the following specifications:

    Dell Chromebook 3100
  • Intel Celeron N4020 processor
  • 11” non-touch screen
  • 4GB Ram, 16GB Storage (students will be using their school Google GSuite account with unlimited cloud storage).
  • This model chromebook will be supported by Google with updates till June 2026.
  • A soft protective case to keep the Chromebook in.

To help gauge value for money, at the time of writing, from the Dell website consumers can purchase that base model laptop themselves for approx. £400 inc VAT.

Year 6 to 7 transition FAQs

  • How will my child know where to go on the first day?

    Plenty of staff will be on hand to meet your child at the front gate and direct them to the appropriate place.  Transition Ambassadors will also be there to escort students.

  • Will they need PE kit on the first day?

    No, the first PE lesson will not involve changing into kit.

  • Will they get lockers?

    Lockers are allocated on a first come, first served basis.  There is a deposit of £15 to pay and they will keep the same locker for the duration of their time at Kingsdown.

  • What do they do about getting lunch?

    Students can get food from one of the 4 serving locations or bring packed lunch. They will pay by using their thumb print linked to their account which you will need to top up in advance.

  • How will my child find their way around school?

    Lots of staff will be out and about at lesson changeover to ensure that students know where to go.  They will also be provided with a map of the buildings. All staff where a high viz jacket during lesson changeover.

  • What if my child forgets something?

    Teachers will be understanding in the early weeks of the term.  If they need something important, the Year Office can contact home for it to be sent in.

  • Where can I get the uniform and what are the expectations?

    Your child is expected to wear the new school uniform. You can purchase this on several dates throughout term 6 at the “pop up shop” at Kingsdown School.

  • How much homework will my child get?

    It may vary a little, but a couple of pieces of homework a night on average. This is accessible on Show My Homework which can be accessed on the home page of the website.

  • What are the rules on mobile phones?

    Students are not encouraged to have mobile phones in school. If it is seen or heard by a member of staff, it will be confiscated. Students can collect it from the main reception at the end of the day but on the third occasion, we request parents to collect it. They can go to the Year Office should they need to contact home.

  • What if my child is ill before school / during the school day?

    If your child is ill before school, you may decide to send them.  You can ring in to alert the Year Office.  If they become ill during the school day, they should go to first aid.  They will then be assessed and you will be contacted if it is necessary.

  • What equipment will they need?

    A full uniform and equipment list is printed in the planner.  They should have a pencil case with pens, (including a green pen), pencil, sharpener, rubber, ruler and scientific calculator.  A glue stick is often a useful addition.

  • What is the school planner and how will my child use it?

    The planner is a communication tool between home and school.  Your child is expected to write any prep work that they have in the planner.  If you wish to update us about any absence or other information, you can use the planner to write in a note.

  • What can my child do if they are upset or having friendship issues?

    They can talk to any member of staff, their tutor, or go to the Year Office.

  • Where can my child find out about extra-curricular clubs?

    There will be information in tutor rooms and circulated around year offices and in assemblies.

  • What time does my child need to be at school?

    All students need to be on site for 8.30am each day.

  • Where can I find the schools key dates and information?

    The website is regularly updated with key information.

  • What if my child loses something at school?

    Please ensure all clothing and equipment is clearly named. Lost property goes to the front office where students can go to claim items.

  • How do I pay for my child’s school dinner / school trips?

    You can make electronic payments through our cashless system, ParentPay, for Kingsdown School activities.  We will send you a letter on transition day detailing the unique user ID and password to access your secure online ParentPay account. 
    Not everyone can pay online, and parents who want to pay cash can easily do so using the PayPoint system through one of the stores that operate in the Kingsdown community:

School Closure / Adverse Weather

In the event of adverse weather causing the school to close, please monitor our website for regular updates.

The School should only be closed because either:

  • Staff (including non-teaching staff) have been able to arrive.
  • There is a breakdown of services (e.g. heating, toilets) or the condition of the premises makes operation impossible.

Please note that if limited staff are able to arrive at school safely, we may partially close the school.

The Site Manager will contact the Head to advise her of access to the School. By 7.45am a message will then be displayed on the Homepage of the website to alert parents of the status of closure. This will also be shared by group call text so please ensure that all of your details are up to date.

Students are requested to access work via Show My Homework which can be found by following the “Homework” link at the top right of the home page.  If for any reason students cannot access show my homework, they can complete Maths and science work using Hegarty Maths and Tassomai online learning platforms.

SEN & Disability Provision

A special educational need is defined as ‘a learning difficulty or disability that makes learning a challenge for a child’. Children with SEND have greater difficulty learning than other children of the same age.

Kingsdown School aims to ensure that appropriate provision is available to champion each and every student to have equal access to curriculum opportunities and to ensure that the curriculum is differentiated to meet individual learning needs.

The newly formed Inclusion team have transformed the way in which they support students this year. The support hubs consist of behaviour, health, literacy, numeracy and SEMH. These five hubs work closely with their mainstream colleagues to offer supplementary support to the regular curriculum, for identified pupils needing periods of specific intervention for a fixed period of time. Additional programmes include Freshstart, Springboard, and access to a school counsellor.

Kingsdown has much of its teaching and learning space at ground floor level, and some access ramps and toilet facilities have been installed to those areas. Kingsdown has two lifts providing access to the Virtual Learning Centre (ICT) and to some science laboratories; however, wheelchair users would not be able to gain access to some upper floors.

Kingsdown has an Autistic Spectrum Condition Centre, which was opened in 2003; it has the capacity for 15 students and each year is usually oversubscribed.  It is designed for pupils who are academically capable of accessing the mainstream curriculum but need more support than can be offered in a totally mainstream environment. Admission to the centre is through the decision of a panel of professionals at the SEN Assessment Team and is not controlled by the usual channels of application. All students admitted to the Centre have an EHCP with Autism named as their primary need. The majority of students follow the mainstream curriculum and attend classes with Educational Support Champions. However, all students are withdrawn from certain lessons so they can complete homework and also work on developing key skills. Individualised ASDAN, National Autistic Society, Entry Level and corrective reading courses are taught in the centre, as these may be more appropriate for those students needing a more skills based practical curriculum.

Anxious and vulnerable students have daily access to ‘Haven Club’ in the ASC Centre, which enables them to have a safe space for unstructured, busy times of the day.

As of March 2013 Kingsdown became a Dyslexia Friendly School, and we were revalidated in 2017.

School’s History

In the mid 1930’s Wiltshire County Council bought seven acres of land for just £750 from the brewers J Arkell & Sons, and local builders Leighfield & Sons were appointed to build the school. On Wednesday 27th of January, 1937, the school was officially opened by the Marquis of Bath.

Since then, Kingsdown School has grown from a five classroom building to a school with over 60 rooms.

During the new millennium the school used funding to create an entirely new learning environment for students, as well as to cater for those with special learning needs. The Virtual Learning Centre comprises of four computer suites and is found on the first floor; on the ground floor is a suite that caters for students with Autistic Spectrum Condition.

In 2011 Kingsdown School took ownership of the old Premier Club (formerly the Raychem Sports Centre). After an extensive refurbishment, students are benefiting from the new state of the art facilities in the Kingsdown Sports Centre. In 2013, construction of a state of the art, all-weather 3G pitch was completed on the field behind the school. This is used during school time for PE lessons and clubs, as well as being let out to sport clubs within the community.

There has also been another transformation, in an unused courtyard area that has been transformed into a covered serving and eating area, and a new canopy has been put in place to shelter students between the main hall and the library.

In the future, where it is not possible to expand we will continue to improve our facilities by replacing the old for the new. In this way, we will be able to continue to offer the best possible education we can for the students of Stratton St Margaret.

In September 2017 Kingsdown School became a partner of the River Learning Trust (RLT). In doing so we joined a Multi Academy Trust (MAT) comprising 5 Secondary Schools, 7 Primary Schools, and a school-centred Initial Teacher Training provider.

Since October 2016, the RLT has been working with the teams, leaders and Governors of Kingsdown and has made a significant impact on the general confidence within and across the school, its culture and strategic direction.

What does it mean to be an RLT school and what are the benefits?

The RLT provides Kingsdown with:

  • Ongoing coaching and mentoring for Kingsdown’s leaders, supporting them in embedding the 
required level of school improvement and ensuring the best possible outcomes for all our students.
  • Access to a wide range of networks which will assist our teams in delivering excellence in and outside of the classroom.
  • Numerous Professional Development opportunities for our staff – both teaching and professional support staff – which has had a huge impact on our all-important staff recruitment and retention strategy.
  • Resources and capacity to support with several key operational processes, previously provided by LAs, such as HR, Financial as well as Governor support.
  • The leaders across the RLT support Kingsdown in regularly reviewing our Self Evaluation processes – the “where we believe we are” and, more importantly, the “what we need to focus on in order to improve further”.

When you have been directed to a google resource such as your new email account or Google Classroom, you will now need to log in using this specific email address format after Friday 26th June 2020:

Your Google password is not automatically linked to your other school passwords.  We have reset all students’ passwords, and we have sent communication in the school bulletin and via text message to parents on what the new password is.  You will be prompted to change your password when you log in, and you are not allowed to re-use a password already used before on Google.

  • Those having difficulty logging into Show My Homework, you can now ONLY log in using your new google account instead of your Office 365 account.

  • To log into your old emails or OneDrive, use this link ( and for the last part of your email address please use (eg.  Do NOT use your old email account to send any messages.

If you forget your password, you can email, or ask a teacher for help. Please specify when asking for help what you are trying to access, and any error messages that you get.

If you have difficulties accessing school resources on Google and you are not being asked to confirm your username and password, it might be that you are already logged into Google with your own personal google account; in which case sign out of google and log in again using the above details.  You can also force your browser to change your currently signed in google account by going to



This most likely means you are already logged into google as another account (maybe your own personal account).  On the same computer/device, visit the following link on your web browser to force it to allow you to sign in as your school account:


You have most likely gone onto a screen to create a new google account, which won’t work.  Try going back to the link your teacher has given you, and when prompted, sign in using your school google account, ensuring NOT to click on anything like ‘Create Account’.


You have likely entered your google username incorrectly.  Please refer to the grey box higher up on this page.  If you are a new student (eg Started with Kingsdown after last September), email with details of the error message, and we will check your account is setup correctly.

  1. Click on the username which will be above the password field (it may look like a link or button).  Please delete the field and type your username again, ensuring you are definitely using the correct username format (see the grey box higher up on this page).  Then try your password again.
  2. If you have never logged into Google before using this school account, you should have been advised by your teacher what the initial password is.
  3. After trying the above, email requesting a password reset, and you must specify this is for your GOOGLE account.  If you can, please email from your school email account.

If you have more than one internet browser on your computer (such as Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Apple Safari) , you can use the lesser used browser for yourself or your school work.  The other browser will generally be unaffected and will allow another google user to be logged in at the same time.  In many cases you can also open a new ‘private’ browser window which should allow you to sign in to a different Google account without affecting other people who also use your computer (In Google Chrome, this option is called Incognito, in Microsoft Edge it is called ‘InPrivate’, and in Safari it is called ‘Private’).



Good punctuality at school is essential for students to achieve their full educational potential.  It is also vital for students to form good habits for later life.  Punctuality records form part of references passed onto employers or higher educational institutes.

All students are expected to arrive punctually for school in the morning and to arrive punctually for each lesson.  Students will enter the school site via the main entrance at the front of school.  We expect all students to be on site by 8.30am in the morning and go straight to tutor time where they will be registered. Students are considered to be late if they arrive after 8.35am. The front gates will be closed and students will need to sign in.

As a safety precaution, students are not permitted to ride their bikes onto the school site, they will need to disembark and walk their bikes onto the school site. Students are reminded to ensure their safety by checking that roads are clear before they cross a main road.

A register is taken at the start of the day and during each lesson.  Students arriving late are recorded as this on the register, along with how many minutes late they are.


We place a strong emphasis on good punctuality; we support this by:-

  • Giving sanctions to students who arrive late to school or lessons.
  • Informing parents, by automated call, if their child arrives late for school.
  • Awarding tutor points to tutor groups where all students have arrived punctually over a period of time.
  • Sending attendance records home to parents each term so that parents can monitor any lateness.
  • Addressing issues of poor timekeeping with individual students and their parents.


We would ask parents to support us in maintaining good punctuality by:-

  • Ensuring that their children get up in plenty of time to be ready and prepared for school.
  • Ensuring their child has organised their bag and equipment the night before so that this does not delay departure in the morning.
  • Discussing any issues of lateness to ensure this does not become a habit.
  • Monitoring their child’s attendance record when it is sent home and looking for patterns of lateness.


Why has my child been marked as absent for the whole morning when they arrived at 9.30am?
As stated above, DfE guidelines state that the register must be closed after a reasonable time in the morning.  If arriving after 9.15am, a child will be marked as an unauthorised absence for the morning session.

Could I receive a fine if my child is persistently late?
If your child receives 10 or more unauthorised absences, you could be issued with a fixed penalty notice.  This is £50 per parent if paid within 28 days, rising to £100 thereafter.

My child was only a couple of minutes late. It seems harsh that he/she should get a late mark.
The school has to abide by the rules and expectations laid down for all schools. Lateness for school (or work) is a failure to arrive on time and will be marked as such. We would encourage students to set off in good time so that any small delay does not cause them to be late.

Our whole family overslept and it is not my child’s fault that he/she is late.  Will they receive a late mark?
This can not be taken as an acceptable reason for lateness so a late mark or unauthorised absence would be recorded, depending on the time of arrival.

My child has to catch the bus to school which is sometimes late.  Will they receive a late mark?
Any lateness is recorded as thus on the register.  We would advise that the child leaves earlier so that even if the bus is late, they will still arrive on time. If the bus is sometimes late, then it is not a reliable way to ensure arrival in good time.

Would you make any allowances for lateness if, for example, there were major traffic problems in the area perhaps because of an accident, so my car/the bus was unavoidably stuck in traffic?
The school cannot make allowances for the individual problem (however genuine it may be). However, it does make allowances when there are known reported major problems that affect a large number of people; very heavy snowfall would be one such example.

What if I phone up/email to say my child is going to be late? Would he/she still get a late mark?
Yes, they would still be marked late, but it is very helpful to know that you are aware and for us to know the expected time of arrival and reason for lateness.

If I know my child is going to be late, do I need to ring/send in a note?
It is very helpful if you do this. If your child is very late, they will be marked as unauthorised absence and your note may give an alternative acceptable reason to allow us to authorise the absence.

What do I do if I don’t agree with your policy on punctuality?
Much of our attendance policy is designed to satisfy DfE regulation but as always, if you feel an approach is unfair or unreasonable, then you can write to the Headteacher and/or Governing Body asking for a review.  However, whilst any such policy is in place, the school will operate as stated.

There are three main infant schools and four main primary schools in the area that feed into Kingsdown School:

Promoting British Values

We actively promote values such as “mutual understanding and respect” and equality between girls and boys, promote values of democracy, respect and tolerance for all races, cultures, faiths and beliefs. This is lived out in the programmes of School Assemblies, Religious Education, English, Geography, History and Personal Development Curriculum.

Students learn about the development of the political system of democratic government in the UK, including the roles of citizens, Parliament and the monarch. They are taught about voting and elections, the role of political parties and the freedoms and liberties enjoyed by the citizens of the U K such as free speech, free movement and free assembly and worship. Students have leadership opportunities through our senior student programme.
Through our Religious Education and Citizenship programmes, students are taught how citizens work together to improve communities. This is put into practice when they become active citizens by fundraising for charities.

Assemblies aim to teach our students to have belief in freedom, and a tolerance of others. In the Religious Education programme, students study other faiths and learn empathy, tolerance and understanding of people from different faith backgrounds.

Interwoven throughout the whole taught Curriculum and the school’s pastoral programme, students are expected to accept personal and social responsibility, respecting and upholding the school rules and the rule of law.

In our school community we encourage our students to show a responsibility to each other and adults in the way they behave in school and on their way to and from school.

The list below describes the understanding and knowledge expected of our students as a result of promoting fundamental British values:

  • an understanding of how citizens can influence decision-making through the democratic process;
  • an appreciation that living under the rule of law protects individual citizens and is essential for their wellbeing and safety;
  • an understanding that there is a separation of power between the executive and the judiciary, and that while some public bodies such as the police and the army can be held to account through Parliament, others such as the courts maintain independence;

Pastoral Care

The pastoral system at Kingsdown School is led by Mrs Lees, Assistant Headteacher, with day to day leadership and management undertaken by 2 Directors of Progress; Mrs Boyall for Years 7-9 (Key Stage 3) and Miss Winwood for Years 10 & 11 (Key Stage 4). Progress Leaders have devolved responsibility for student progress and behaviour for children within their year groups.

The school is supported by a number of highly effective staff and robust policies and procedures. In addition, the services of the Local Authority are contracted to provide support in the areas of Education Welfare and Targeted Mental Health.

The school’s assessment and reporting procedures provide all staff with detailed information relating to current levels of attainment, predicted grades, attitude to learning and progress. The pastoral team keep abreast of students performance across the subjects and provide tutoring, mentoring and support where necessary.

The pastoral system at Kingsdown has been commended by Ofsted inspectors noting some very strong features.

‘Options’ is the term used to describe the process that students go through at the end of Key Stage 3 to determine which subjects they will be studying during Key Stage 4 and therefore which subjects they will be studying for GCSEs (and equivalent).

Our curriculum at Kingsdown is changing, and as such there will be no options process for Year 8 in 2019/20. The current year 8 students will study a three year Key Stage 3 before making their ‘options’ in year 9 ready to begin Key Stage 4 in year 10.

The reason we are transitioning is because we believe as a school that fundamentally all students have a right to broad and balanced curriculum that takes individual differences into account and by moving back the stage at which students opt to narrow their personal curriculum, we are ensuring greater knowledge to be taught to all our students.

At Kingsdown School we provide a broad and varied curriculum at key stage 3 to support all our students with the necessary skills and knowledge for a fast changing world and encourage the attitudes and qualities which will lead students to pursue their learning beyond year 11, and be happy, safe and successful in their adult life. Further details of this curriculum can be found on the curriculum pages of this website.

Further details about the timeline for Cohort 2023 will be released during the academic year 2020/21.

The curriculum at Key Stage 4 consists of a mixture of Core Subjects and Option Subjects. Students will be able to choose some subjects according to their strengths and interests. They will be guided through their choices by subject teachers, tutors and other staff to ensure that their choices are appropriate.

The Key Stage 4 (KS4) curriculum reflects the National Curriculum requirements and the curriculum policy of the school. We want to offer as much individual choice as we can, so that the students can follow courses they need for interest and their future career paths. However, there are also certain constraints and requirements that govern students’ choices.

We urge that all students opt for a broad and balanced curriculum. Whilst all GCSEs have equal status, they do stress different skills and ways of learning. When making choices students must balance their skills and learning styles in order to keep options open for later life, such as choosing college or ‘A level’ courses.

Core Learning: What does everyone do?

All students are taught a core programme of subjects. These are the subjects and skills that are statutory for all children aged 14-16, with the addition of English Literature, which we feel is important too, and is studied by everyone.

Core Learning comprises:

    English Literature
    Combined Science (double award) or Separate Sciences (GCSE Biology/GCSE Chemistry/GCSE Physics)
    Personal Development (non-examination)
    Physical Education (non-examination)

Option Subjects: What can you choose?

We want our students to be committed to their subjects and so we allow them to choose from four subjects from a range of areas. Whilst we do give as much choice as possible, all students are expected to take one EBacc subject from: History; Geography or a Modern Foreign Language, and from 2021 most students will be required to take two (History/Geography AND a Modern Foreign Language). We make every effort to ensure that students study the course they opt for. We are constrained by constructing a timetable, staffing and group sizes. This is why we ask that you also make reserve options. Any student who does not get their top four choices or their reserve choices will be seen by their Director of Progress.

We have a number of policies and procedures in place that contribute to our safeguarding commitment, including our Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy which can be viewed in the Policies section of our website.

There are 5 main elements to our policy and procedures:
• Ensuring we practice safe recruitment in checking the suitability of staff and volunteers to work with children.
• Raising awareness of child protection issues & working on the prevention of abuse, through training, teaching and pastoral support offered to students.

Sometimes we may need to share information and work in partnership with other agencies when there are concerns about a child’s welfare. We will ensure that our concerns about our pupils are discussed with parents/carers first, unless we have reason to believe that such a move would be contrary to the child’s welfare.

We actively support the Government’s Prevent Agenda to counter radicalism and extremism.

We have a dedicated team who have all received in depth safeguarding training to ensure that we:

- Identify children who may need early help, are at risk or have been harmed
- Secure the help that children need and refer them to the expertise to help them

There is a great website called ‘The Dock’ that helps young people and parents in Swindon. It gives advice on national concerns regarding young people and offers local solutions. Really worth a visit. It offers assistance on matters such as:

  • Young people’s options
  • School holiday workshops

Mental Health & Well Being

Kooth is an online service by XenZone, who have been commissioned in this area by the Swindon Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG). In Swindon they provide online counselling and emotional well being help for children and young people. The support is free, confidential, and anonymous.  It can be accessed using an internet enabled smart phone, tablet, or computer.

Guidance for if a child goes missing

Why is this important?

  • When a child goes missing or runs away from home, this should be seen as a cry for help and should be taken seriously.
  • Every year 100,000 children and young people (under 16) go missing or run away from home.
  • Up to 70% of children who are sexually exploited or go missing run away. Some times they go missing more than once.

What should you do if your child is missing or runs away?

Check for signs they might have gone e.g. social media, friends etc…

Think- has there been a change in behaviour recently? Have they been wearing different clothes, using substances or have changed their friends?

Call - the police on 101, you do not need to wait 24 hours. Keep a log of the police officer you have been in contact with.

What should happen afterwards?

All children who run away from home must get a return home interview from an independent person who listens to them and helps them to resolve issues so that they can stay safe.

Studies show that homework adds more than a year’s progress for students who regularly complete it.

The type of homework also matters. Homework should mainly rehearse knowledge which has already been taught. Individual homeworks should normally last between 30 and 45 minutes.

The brain remembers more when it is tested, and when these tests are low stakes. For this reason, a good deal of homework is in the form of quizzes.


We want our students to know as much as possible. Cognitive scientists tell us that “understanding is memory in disguise”. The more we know, the easier it is to understand new ideas. A famous study proved this with a group students who were poor readers, who loved baseball. When tested on a text on the subject of baseball, they consistently outscored a group of very good readers. In other words, our ability to read is largely based on the breadth of our knowledge. The more your child learns, the easier it is to learn new information and ideas.

Consequently, we need our students to complete their homework each and every time. It will simply make them more intelligent. We need our parents to help their children develop this routine, so that understanding and learning become easier.


We need our students to complete their homework each and every time it is set. These are habits which will last a life time. But, in the short term, they will also lead to very good grades.

Our school day finishes at 3 O’Clock. We would expect students to do an hour of homework every night. This only extends the working day to the equivalent of 4 O’Clock, which is a gentle preparation for life after Kingsdown. However, this hour of homework will have a huge impact on what our students can remember and understand. With many subjects taking three years to teach a GCSE, your child should be aiming for very high grades.

We therefore need you to encourage, even to require your child to do their homework every day.

We also need you to log on to Satchel One (Show My Homework) so that you can see how well your child is doing. All their quiz scores are visible to you.


Homework is set on Satchel One (Show My Homework), and will often be completed online. Students without Wi-Fi at home are able to use the ICT suites after school, before school, and at lunch time to complete their homework.

Each quiz set for a student can be taken up to three times. Students should always do this in order to aim for a score of 100%.

Scores in class will often be ranked so students can see how they compare to their classmates. Gaining a high score does not depend on a student’s ability. It is an accurate measure of how much attention they have paid in class, and how much effort they have put into their homework quiz.

Students are expected to read regularly as a means of broadening and extending their knowledge and understanding of subjects and to develop their vocabulary.

Introduction from our Chair of Governors

I am delighted to have been elected to serve a second year as Chair of Governors of our Local Governing Body. As governors we continue to support and challenge the school to be the best that it can be, on its journey to excellence.

We welcome the ongoing opportunities presented by us being part of the River Learning Trust and by the appointment of new members to the senior leadership team. The vision and mission of the school has been redeveloped with our guidance and we are very proud of the way in which staff and students alike have embraced the new Kingsdown School.

While there are several types of governors, the role of each governor is to work as part of a team supporting a school and the Headteacher to decide school policy, help recruit staff and manage budgets.

The governors meet as a full body 4 times per year where they are updated on the performance and status of aspects of the school.

Additionally individual governors sit on one or more of the various sub-committees. These meetings are usually 4 times per year, just prior to the full governors meetings.

Impact Committee (Safeguarding, Teaching & Learning and Curriculum)

Becoming a Governor

Schools need people who have energy, enthusiasm and fresh ideas to support them as governors. You don’t need to have had any previous experience or knowledge. Common sense, a genuine interest in education and commitment are the most important qualities required.

Becoming a governor could be a way of contributing to your local school and learning new skills. You don’t have to have a child at a school to become a governor.

Kingsdown School has arranged with Microsoft to allow all current students and staff to be able to install Microsoft Office on home computers and mobile devices for free.
Microsoft Office includes Word (word processor), Excel (spreadsheets), and PowerPoint (presentations).  Additional apps are also available depending on the model of your computer or device.  You may also install it across several devices at the same time (e.g. a computer, a tablet, and a smartphone).

If you would like to obtain this software for home, please note:

  • The software is only valid while you are a student at Kingsdown School.  Permission to use the software will be taken away once you leave school. You’ll then need to remove the software or obtain a new Microsoft Office account.
  • Kingsdown’s ICT support department does NOT support this software or devices it is installed on. If there are problems installing the software on your personal computer or laptop.  Microsoft’s Office Support page should help with most problems.
  • If you use the software on your smartphone, the school’s mobile phone policy still applies to you and it should not be used during lessons.
  • This software should work on most computers (Windows, Apple Macs) and also modern mobile devices (Android, iPhone, iPad, Windows) purchased in the last 2-3 years providing it’s kept updated.  If your equipment is older then you may need to check if it’s supported.
  • Don’t forget to ensure your home computer’s antivirus software is also up to date.

To obtain the software:

  1. To access the software, when on your home computer or mobile device, visit, and sign in using your student email address and password.  If you are using OneNote in your computing classes this process will be familiar to you.
  2. After logging in there should be advice or a link to Install Office, eg ‘Install Office 2016’ or ‘Get Office apps’.  Follow the guidance that then appears (instructions will vary depending on your computing device).
  3. We will be hosting GCSE Results Day for students only on Thursday 20th August 2020, however we will have to put into place some changes to ensure everyone’s continued safety.

We would like to invite students onto site at staggered times depending on their surname. The schedule for this can be found below.

0930 - 0945 Students whose surname begins with A-E
0945 - 1000 Students whose surname begins with F-J
1000 - 1015 Students whose surname begins with K-N
1015 - 1030 Students whose surname begins with O-R
1030 - 1045 Students whose surname behind with S-Z

Please note that in order to minimise the risk to staff and students, the only staff available will be members of the SLT. Teaching staff have been asked to not attend.

We have also arranged for Jess Hill, who is the Higher Education Liaison Officer for Swindon to be on hand for students who wish to discuss their next steps and future options on the day.

Students should arrive during their allocated time slot and should enter through the front gate of the school and onto the front field to collect their results. Parents are asked to remain in their cars if they are dropping off students.

Results will also be released to students through Edulink from 11AM on Thursday 20th August, and will be available until Sunday 23rd August. Parents can have access to the results through their logins from Friday 21st August until Sunday 23rd August. Details will be sent out nearer the time to inform you how these can be accessed.

If any student is unable to attend, then their results slip will be placed in the main school reception for collection from Monday 24th August. Students must bring a photographic ID with them in order to collect their results.

Examination Results 2019

Cohort 2019 celebrated a very strong set of historic GCSE results – results that are transformational.  The overall Progress 8 score for the school, which compares students KS2 achievement with their GCSE outcomes shows that as a school we are just above the national average (score was +0.02), and significantly above the average for schools in the town (-0.07).

As well as progress, this year’s results were strong on the combined English and Maths measure with 60% of students achieving a 4 or above in both subjects.  At Grade 5+, a strong pass, 39% of students achieved at least a grade 5 in both English and Maths.  Department results across the school showed significant improvements.  Again, these results were a significant increase on last years.  As well as the overall results, we are particularly thrilled with many individual student achievements.

These results show a significant movement from last year, where this year’s students performed on average half a grade better than last year’s students when compared to students nationally. This change has been as a result of our strong leadership resulting in high expectations of all, improved curriculum, teaching and learning and constant championing each and every one of students.

Accessing the system

You can access the system as a ‘website’ on your computer or phone, or as an ‘app’ on most modern smartphones and tablets.

Logging in

You should now get a login screen (whether you choose the website or app method) asking for possibly a School ID, Username, and Password.  Advice differs for Students and Parents:

  • Students - to log in use the following details:
    • If you have a field titled ‘School ID’, enter Kingsdown
    • ‘Username’ is the same username which you use to log into the school computers, eg 19BloggsJ
    • ‘Password’ is the same password which you use to log into the school computers
    • Alternatively if you prefer or have forgotten your computer password, you can now also use your school google account to log into Edulink

  • Parents - to log in, please refer to your email with the subject title ‘Kingsdown School - EduLink One - Your login details’

Statement of Entry

All candidates receive a statement of entry from school indicating the subjects they are being entered for and the levels of entry, where applicable. Please check that these are correct. Some subjects only have one tier of entry; some have Foundation & Higher tiers. Students must check everything on their statements of entry very carefully. Particularly check that all personal details (date of birth, spelling of names which must be their LEGAL forename and surname) are accurate as these will appear on certificates and it may be difficult to change them once certificates are awarded.

Exam Boards

The school uses the following exam boards: AQA, Edexcel Pearson, OCR, WJEC and NCFE.


External exam timetables are displayed on the school’s website and are also displayed on the Exam notice board in the main school building corridor. Prior to each exam series, students will receive an individual timetable with their own specific examinations detailing dates, times and duration of exams, as well as their examination rooms. Check this carefully. If students think something is wrong they need to see the Exams Officer immediately.

If a last minute change of tier for an exam entry is made at the request of the candidate or their parents then the fee for the amendment will be invoiced to parents.

Subject staff will inform students of dates of practical examinations/language speaking tests when dates are confirmed.

For any student who has a clash where two subjects are timetabled at the same time, the school will make special timetable arrangements. Students must check their individual timetable and see the Exams Officer if they are unsure of what to do. If they think there is a clash on their timetable that has not been resolved, they also need to see the Exams Officer immediately.

Morning (AM) exams will normally start at 0900 and Afternoon (PM) exams will start at 1400. There are times where there are clashes with individuals are due to take more than one exam at the same time. In such instances an alternative arrangement will be put in place and you will be notified of this in advance.

Students must make sure that they know exactly when their exams are, especially whether they are morning or afternoon. Students should ensure that they allow enough time to get to school so if they are delayed for any reason e.g. traffic, they will still arrive in good time.

Please note that for exams in the afternoon, candidates may finish after 1500 and so arrangement will need to be made to collect students should this be required.


Students need to make sure that they bring in all relevant items for each exam, e.g. compasses for a Maths exam. Students should also make sure that they bring in black pens, pencils, eraser, ruler and a sharpener in a CLEAR (not coloured or tinted) pencil case or plastic bag. Do not use correcting pens, fluid or tape, erasable pens, highlighters or gel pens in your answer..

Where calculators are allowed for the exam they must be free of lids, cases and covers. Students are responsible for clearing the data in their calculators prior to taking any exams. Students should check the regulations in the ‘Notices to Candidates’ which are on the JCQ website and are also linked below.

Examination Regulations

Notices to candidates which are issued jointly by all the examining boards are available to view on the JCQ website; they are also linked below. All
candidates must read them carefully and note that to break any of the examination rules or regulations could lead to disqualification from all subjects. The school must report any breach of regulations to the examinations board.

Attendance at Exams

Candidates are responsible for checking their own timetable and arriving at school on the correct day and time, properly dressed in school uniform and with the correct equipment. Candidates must arrive at the specified venue 15 minutes prior to the start time of their examination. They should wait quietly outside the exam venue until instructed to enter. Candidates who arrive late for an examination may still be admitted but they may not receive any additional time. If special consideration applies then you must speak to the Exams Officer.

Full school uniform must be worn by all students attending school for examinations.

For examinations held in the Main Hall, candidates should line up in C-block courtyard and for examinations taking place in the New Gym, candidates should line up on the Tennis Courts. For both venues, all candidates should line up in tutor groups and in alphabetical order. Those candidates taking exams in other venues should ensure they are there 15 mins before the start time of the exam. There may be up to 4 different exams taking place at the same time and this ensures seating can be arranged effectively within the shortest amount of time. It also ensures that candidates receive the correct exam paper.

Candidates must wait quietly outside for a member of staff to invite them into the venue. Once inside the room, exam board rules state that candidates must be silent. If there is any communication between any candidates it will be assumed that cheating is taking place and this will be treated accordingly. Candidates must not talk until they have left the examination room.

All items of equipment, pens, pencils, mathematical instruments, etc. should be visible to the invigilators at all times. Either a transparent pencil case or a clear plastic bag (without any writing) must be used. Pens should be BLACK ink or ballpoint. No correction pens, erasable pens or correcting tape/fluid are allowed.

For the Mathematics and Science exams, candidates should make sure their calculators conform to the examination regulations. If in doubt, they should check with their teacher. Remove any covers or instructions and make sure batteries are new. Candidates must also ensure that they have cleared anything stored in the calculator before using it for examinations. Please make sure that any alarms are turned off.

Do not attempt to communicate with or distract other candidates. Examination regulations are very strict regarding items that may be taken into the examination room. If candidates break these rules they may be disqualified from the examination.

Candidates are not permitted any web enabled sources of information such as tablets, mobile phones, MP3 players or smart watches in the examination room. Ideally these devises will all be left at home, however if this is not possible they should be switched off and be in bags.

If a mobile phone (or any other type of electronic communication or storage device) is found in their possession during an examination (even if it is turned off) it will be taken from the candidate and a report made to the appropriate exam board. No exceptions can be made and the school cannot be held responsible for accidental damage.

Food is not permitted in the examination room although water is allowed provided it is in a small, clear (not coloured or tinted) plastic bottle with the label removed. Filter and infusion bottles are not allowed.

Under no circumstances are bags or coats allowed into the examination room. Before going to their examination room, candidates should leave them in their locker or in the designated area. Please note that we cannot accept responsibility for personal belongings and would recommend that valuables are not brought into school.

Candidates must listen carefully to instructions and notices read out by the invigilators – there may be amendments to the exam paper that they need to know about.
Candidates must check they have the correct question paper – check the subject, paper and tier of entry. Candidates must not start writing until told to do so by the invigilator. All instructions should be carefully read and answers numbered clearly.

Candidates will not be allowed to leave an examination early. If they have finished the paper they are advised to use the remaining time to check over their answers and ensure they have completed their details correctly.

Candidates must check that they have completed the front of their answer books (and any supplementary sheets) with their candidate number, legal forename and legal surname.

Question papers, answer documents and additional paper must NOT be taken from the examination room.

If the fire alarm sounds during an examination, the invigilators will tell candidates what to do. They should not panic. If the room has to be evacuated candidates will be asked to leave in silence in the order instructed. Everything must be left on the desk. During this period of evacuation, examination regulations still apply and candidates must not communicate with other candidates or any other person. They will be escorted to a designated assembly point. On return to the examination room candidates must not start writing until the invigilator tells them to. Candidates will be allowed the full working time for the examination and a report will be sent to the exam board detailing the incident.

Absence from Exams

If difficulties are experienced during the examination period (e.g. illness, injury, personal problems) please inform the school at the earliest possible point so we can help or advise.

Only in exceptional circumstances are candidates allowed special consideration for absence from any part of an examination. It is essential that medical or other appropriate evidence is obtained and given to the Exams Officer without delay in all cases where an application is to be made for special consideration.

Parents and candidates are advised that the school will require payment of entry fees (approximately £29 - £73 per subject) should a candidate fail to attend an
examination without good reason and without informing the school.

Please note that misreading the timetable will not be accepted as a satisfactory explanation of absence.

Parents are asked to refrain from arranging family holidays when examinations are taking place and if absence permission for this purpose is sought, authorisation will not be given, and if taken Parents may be liable to pay for the entry fees for the candidate (approximately £29 - £73 per subject).

Mock Exams

Mock GCSE examinations are extremely important as they give students the external examination experience and ensure they are familiar with regulations and procedures to prepare them for the forthcoming GCSE examinations. The results also provide an indication of the GCSE grade that a candidate would have gained if it had been the real examination. Students will be able to see whether they are on target and establish the areas of study which need attention. It is worth noting that in some subjects the results are taken into account when determining the tiers of entry for the GCSE examinations students will be taking in the summer.

For these reasons, the internal examinations are run on the lines of the external GCSEs and the same rules and regulations regarding equipment, uniform, attendance, and absence apply.

Students are encouraged to make the most of this series of examinations in terms of preparation and performance.

As with any area of interest for young or vulnerable people, safety has to be considered paramount. E-safety is a complex area as technology provides as many problems as there are solutions. To ensure child protection, good practice is as important as ANY computer aided application.

E-Safety at Kingsdown

At Kingsdown, good practice in conjunction with software purchases and policies, we ensure that students are as safe as possible. We have an ICT - Acceptable Usage Policy (AUP) which every user (Including teachers) accept every time they log on. We have also purchased powerful auditing software which constantly monitors all activity, including the filtering of email. Social networking, Auction, Chat, Gambling and Instant messaging (among others) sites are banned wherever possible.

As part of the computing curriculum, pupils in Key Stage 3 learn about what information should not be shared in a public domain. As well as this, pupils are educated about the Internet etiquette and guidelines that should be adhered to on social networking sites. PSHCE is also a key area where pupils are educated about E-Safety and the dangers associated with Internet browsing and the consequences of inappropriate behaviour online. Pupil Premium Statement 2019-20

The Pupil Premium was introduced by the Coalition Government in January 2011 to improve educational outcomes for our most disadvantaged students. The government gives additional funds for each student receiving Free School Meals (FSM), registered Children Looked After (CLA) and any child who has been in receipt of Free School Meals in the last six years (known as Ever6 FSM). In addition to these groups, a lesser sum is given for children with parents in the Armed Forces.

At Kingsdown we are committed to ensuring disadvantaged students have the same high aspirations and opportunities to enable them to exceed their potential. The support and intervention strategy is led by one of the Assistant Headteachers. We will continue to use the funding for disadvantaged students to support students to raise standards of attainment and progress, improve attendance and attitude to learning. Kingsdown School bases its strategies for the use of funding for disadvantaged students on the findings of The Sutton Trust. The funding has been used in a number of different areas, including but not limited to:

  • Tuition - To increase staffing for specialist interventions especially in English and Mathematics. We have increased provision in Year 7 interventions in literacy and numeracy.
  • Support staff – To provide staffing in The Student Support Centre which supports students’ attendance, self-esteem and attitudes to learning. To increase staffing to run our after-school homework club, learning café and specialist reading interventions.
  • Interventions & keyworkers – 1:1 tuition, Assessment for learning resources and INSET for staff, reading interventions through the SEND School of Learning, revision sessions for students, 1:1 mathematics and English support.
  • Ensuring all students have equal access and opportunities to take part in wider Kingsdown Life (e.g. school trips, educational visits and support extra-curricular activities) which some students would otherwise not be able to afford.
  • Providing resources such as revision materials which would otherwise pose a barrier to learning.

In Term 1, for each student, a review takes place in order to assess their needs and plan a personalised provision to support their school experience.

Even if you do not wish him/her to have the meals, this would mean the school could still claim funding that may be used to help your child.

My name is Miss Humphries, and I am Kingsdown’s fully-qualified Careers Advisor. I was a student at Kingsdown School myself some years ago, and so I can relate to what it’s like to be in our current students’ shoes. I have an open-door policy, and warmly welcome any student into the Careers Office to discuss their needs.

As a parent or carer, helping young people to decide on their future is a real challenge; there are so many options to choose from, it can be hard to know what is right. Our role in Careers is to ensure you have the support available to do just that.

I meet with every single Year 11 student, as well as some students from the lower years, to provide impartial careers information, advice and guidance, to support our young people to make an informed choice about which post-16 route will best suit their academic needs and aspirations.

Harrison Catering Services Ltd at Kingsdown School

Kingsdown School is pleased to announce that from September 2014, Harrisons Catering Services Ltd has been chosen to provide its catering service. Since its founding in 1994, Harrison Catering Services has always been about quality fresh food prepared on-site and served by people who love what they do. Over 100 clients across the UK enjoy a Harrison food service, with more than 100,000 meals being served each day by approximately 2,000 staff across more than 270 locations.

Harrison understands that what children eat affects their health and their ability to learn and perform in the classroom. At Kingsdown School, our catering team provides nutritious, balanced meals, and we work to educate the pupils on how to make healthier food choices. Our goal is to instil a love and understanding of fresh, healthy food at a young age that will positively influence them throughout life.

All Harrison staff receive training in how to prepare and serve healthier food through the company’s bespoke Eat Well Live Well ® training programme. Our catering team at Kingsdown works with the School Council to tailor menus to the tastes and preferences of the children. We introduce further interest and excitement to our menus through themed lunches and dinners ranging from special holidays like Halloween and Christmas to cuisines from around the world, tying these into the school curriculum whenever possible.

We have a no nut policy at Kingsdown and work with parents to make any other adaptations necessary to accommodate specific food allergies. A 3 week menu cycle can be found at the top of this page.

Kingsdown School operates a two-week timetable with 49 hours of taught lessons throughout week 1 and week 2. The school closes to students at lunchtime (13:20) on a Friday of week 2.

Our five-year curriculum is designed to be ambitious and give all learners the knowledge and cultural capital they need to succeed in life. Each department has planned and sequenced the curriculum to allow the development of knowledge and skills for future learning and employment. Most lessons begin with knowledge retrieval practice in the ‘Do Now Activity (DNA)’, so knowledge stays in long term memory. Homework is largely quiz based for the same reason. Because higher skills of analysis, evaluation and synthesis rely heavily on subject knowledge, completion of homework is essential. We consequently run next day detentions if homework is missed.

All our Key Stage 3 assessments now include knowledge-based tests so that students develop long term memory and master more of their subject content. In addition, summative tests assess how that knowledge is applied. These occur three times a year.

Both DNAs and homework quizzes are planned so that students are retested at optimum times, using spaced learning (and the Ebbinghaus Forgetting Curve). Departments also plan their delivery of units to take advantage of spaced learning.

The curriculum is designed to be ambitious and to meet the needs of all of our students.

Throughout year 7 and 8 students will study the core subjects of maths, English and science alongside Humanities (geography, history, and religious education), computing, PE and dance, music, drama and art. In year 7 students study French or Spanish and will continue with this language to options from year 9.

Skills in computing are acquired through a combination of specialist teaching and an increasing range of experiences across other subjects.

From September 2020 all subjects will follow a 3 year Key Stage 3.

Year 9, 10 and 11 Curriculum

The vast majority of students take 4 options to ensure a broad and balanced curriculum and to increase students’ opportunities for A level and other choices at 16. A small cohort (a single class) each year is identified as needing extra support in English and maths. These students accommodate this by taking three optional subjects instead of four.

All students follow GCSE courses in maths, English Language and English Literature, and Maths, English and science GCSE courses do not start until year 10. From September 2020 this will be true of all subjects.

A suite of optional subjects is then made available and includes those offered in years 7 and 8. Students are expected to continue to study at least one Humanities subject, (History and/or Geography) and/or a Modern Foreign Language to satisfy the EBacc requirements. Additional subjects as options are then available for students to choose which include, RE, Classical Civilisation, Business Studies, Drama, Music, PE and Health and Social Care. The options process is open to allow maximum choice and flexibility for students.

Support and Intervention

Students who on entry to the school require support with literacy and numeracy receive additional tuition in tutor times and through a withdrawal programme co-ordinated by our Inclusion department. Over 70% improve enough each year to need no further maths and English support.

Ongoing intervention is provided for students by teachers and additional support where identified is set in place.

Key Stage 3

In September 2018 we conducted an extensive review of the effectiveness and reliability of all assessment at Kingdown School to ensure assessments in all year groups are purposeful, accurate and reliable and provide relevant, meaningful and timely information to ensure students make sustained and substantial progress.

At KS3, all departments will now report a percentage attainment grade for knowledge-based assessments and summative assessments alongside an average percentage for students with a similar start point. Knowledge-based assessments test a students ability to retain the core knowledge required for the course they are studying, whereas summative-based assessments test a students ability to apply that knowledge. Feedback given from all these assessments aid each student to know their individual strengths and areas for development and enable all students to make progress across the key stage.

Each subject decides how many assessments they will conduct in order to fit into their curriculum; however, there will be at least one knowledge-based assessment and one summative-based assessment each term. We report this data home to parents at the end of Terms 2, 4 and 6.

Key Stage 4

For students in years 9 and 10, we issue a current attainment grade and a target grade for each student in all their subjects three times a year. In year 11 we issue twice a year a current attainment grade which students have been awarded based on a Mock Exam as well as a target and a professional prediction. This professional prediction is based on current attainment as well as attitude to learning. It indicates what a student is likely to achieve in each of their subjects in the summer examinations if they continue to work at their current level of effort and attainment.

Each subject designs their assessment points to fit with their curriculum; however, we report this data home to parents at the end of Terms 1, 3 and 6 for years 9 and 10 and report home for students in year 11 after the mock exam periods in November and March.

Attitude to Learning

In addition to the current attainment, at both key stages, we also grade each student’s attitude to learning in two categories: ‘Behaviour for Learning’ and ‘Preparation for Lessons’. Descriptors of the criteria used can be seen below. For each of these categories, teachers have graded each student using a scale where:

    ‘1’ indicates that your child is exceeding our high expectations and is ‘outstanding’ in that category.
    ‘2’ indicates that they are meeting our high expectations and are ‘good.’
    ‘3’ indicates that your child is not meeting our expectations, and therefore is a ‘cause for concern’.

Attendance & Absence

Attendance Matters

At Kingsdown School we want our students to be in school learning and striving for success. Research has shown that regular attendance and good punctuality are crucial factors in students achieving their full potential in education. For this reason, we reward and celebrate students who achieve 100% attendance and whose attendance is improving each half term.

If a student’s attendance falls below 95% this is considered a cause for concern. Whilst some absence from school is unavoidable, it is vital that all students strive to be in school every day. Parental support in achieving this is absolutely crucial.

Department for Education statistics show that of pupils who missed between 10% and 20% of school, only 35% manage to go on on to achieve five good GCSEs. This compares with 73% of pupils with over 95% attendance. Furthermore, attendance records are included with a reference written by the school and therefore poor attendance can have further damaging long term consequences.

The target attendance figure for all students is a minimum of 95% attendance.

Attendance and progress of students at the end of year 11 are strongly linked. Below is a graph that shows for the cohort of students who left in 2019, how their attendance in year 11 linked to their overall progress. A progress 8 score of 0 would mean that a student is making the same level of progress as students nationally who achieved the same results at the end of key stage 2.


How do we manage attendance?

Your child will be informed of their current attendance by their tutor. We are monitoring students closely whose attendance is falling and will contact you if your child’s attendance does not improve. As a parent/carer you are committing an offence if you fail to ensure that your child attends school regularly and punctually, even if they are missing school without your knowledge. It is important that parents/carers monitor single days of absence, as these days soon add up to weeks.

What we are asking you to do?

As a parent, there are important steps that we would ask you to take to support us in this focus on high levels of attendance:
• Ensure your child attends every day, on time, equipped and ready to learn. Tutor time begins at 8.35am and students should be in the building by 8.30am. The front gates will be closed at 8.35. Students are considered late if the arrive after 8.35am and will be registered by a member of our pastoral team as being late. This will result in a detention that will happen during the school day. • Ensure the school has up to date addresses and telephone numbers. We will contact you if your child is absent and you have not contacted the school. This ensures that any absence is quickly identified.

If your child is ill, please contact the school on each day of absence and provide an explanatory note on their return to school.

If no contact is received regarding the absence, it is recorded as unauthorised. Ultimately the school is responsible for deciding if the absence is acceptable or not. Only genuine absence will be authorised. You will be asked to provide medical certificates if your child has a poor attendance record.

Please ensure that medical appointments are made outside of school time.

Avoid trivial absences such as, ‘buying new shoes’. This would not be accepted as a reasonable absence.

Respond to letters or telephone calls regarding attendance and punctuality.

Reporting an absence

  • Telephone the school as soon as possible on 01793 822284
  • Send a letter confirming reason for absence to your child’s tutor immediately on return to school
  • Be aware that any unexplained absences are recorded as unauthorised and will appear on school reports

Medical Evidence may be requested for 5 or more consecutive school days absence due to illness (3 days if prior to or after a school holiday).

It is essential that the Attendance Officer is notified every day that a student is off sick. This is not only keeps your child’s Attendance records accurate but also ensures their safety. If you were to send your child back to school and we assume they are still absent due to illness an incident could occur, on the way to school, that neither parties are aware of.

Family Holiday will not be granted during term time unless the Head Teacher considers it to be extenuating circumstances.

About Us

Kingsdown is a mixed 11-16 Academy. We are a popular school and most of our students come from our three feeder schools in Stratton St Margaret, and one in a neighbouring village of South Marston. Students also choose to join us from out of area, space permitting. We have 9 forms of entry into each year group. In addition, we have students attending our Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC) Centre. The Centre is specifically designed, staffed and built for students on the Autistic spectrum. Above the ASC Centre is a Virtual Learning Centre (VLC) with 120 computer stations.

The pastoral team and the school has made great advances in its knowledge of each and every one of its students; teachers are provided with high quality and valuable information about the prior attainment of every student in their teaching groups, which ensures that pupil’s individual needs can be met appropriately.

We continually monitor and evaluate our performance and aim to provide the best all-round education for our students, preparing them for their future lives beyond school.

Transition Days

Transitions days for Year 6 will typically be in the last term before leaving primary school.  Over the course of the two days, the students will meet their tutor and spend time in their tutor groups and experience some of the subjects they will cover in year 7. Students need to bring lunch with them on both days and will need to wear their primary school uniform.

Rules, Rewards, & Sanctions

At Kingsdown School, we want you to work hard and have a positive attitude towards your education. Staff members can reward you by giving achievement points and also be rewarding you with gold cards. These are worth 25 points and will be presented weekly in tutor time. You can earn achievement points by displaying the Kingsdown Beats: Respect & responsibility, Stretch & Challenge and Pride & Ambition. If you make poor choices, you will receive behaviour points. These will be deducted from your achievement points to give you a conduct balance.

How to be organised (equipment you will need, bringing PE kit, food ingredients etc)

You will have a two week timetable that will be given to you on your first day. You will have a copy in your planner which should be on you at all times. During each week, there will be some lessons where you require additional equipment. You will be told in advance what you need to bring but will include: PE kit, cooking ingredients (during DT food rotation).

Timings of the Day

Since September 2018, students will register with their tutors first thing in the morning. All students need to be on site from 8.30am. There are five 1 hour lessons each day with a 20 minute morning break and 40 minute lunch time. On a Friday week 2, school finishes early for students to allow staff to work together in Curriculum Innovation Time.

Clubs take place at lunch times and after school most days. A timetable will be issued at the start of term and the range of activities we offer is diverse. These include:

Orchestra, Choir, Chamber Choir, Ensemble, Keyboard Club, Drama, Netball, Football, Basketball, Fitness, Hockey, Dance, Art Textiles, Art, Chess.

Admissions Guidance

Kingsdown School welcomes new applications from students living within the local community. Applications can be made for students moving from Year 6 to into the new academic year in September or throughout the year into all year groups.

The deadline for those wishing to transition in 2021 from primary school to the Swindon secondary school of your choice is typically the 31st of October. Contact Swindon Council if you need to make a late application.

We provide an excellent transition package for new Year 6 students who join the school. The transition package includes numerous visits to Kingsdown for taster days, transition activities including technology days, the Summer School and performances such as literacy festivals and concerts. Our staff and students also visit the Primary schools in order to familiarise them with the Kingsdown Community. Additionally, Kingsdown staff meet with primary teachers to ensure we are aware of all students needs that are joining us, and put support packages in place where appropriate.

We accept new applications and assess them in line with our admissions criteria. The admissions criteria include the following:

  • Children in the care of a local authority or with accommodation provided by that authority as defined by Section 22 of the Children Act 1989.
  • Children with a sibling (half, step or adoptive brother or sister living in the same family unit) who will be attending Kingsdown School at the time of their admission.
  • Children who are enrolled at one of the four partner schools: Colebrook Junior, Grange Junior, Ruskin Junior and South Marston CofE Primary, at the time of application.
  • Children that live within Kingsdown School’s designated area.
  • Children that do not live within Kingsdown School’s designated area.

It gives me great pleasure to introduce myself to you as the Headteacher of Kingsdown School. I was deeply honoured by the school Governors’ appointment and, with it, the opportunity of leading such a fantastic school. I take enormous pride in the school’s leaders, teachers and professional support staff who are the powerhouse behind our collective vision for our school and for our students.

Kingsdown is a mixed 11–16 Secondary School located in Stratton St Margaret, Swindon. It offers a vibrant learning environment, one in which its students take great pride in both their learning, their behaviour and their individual aspirations. Our teachers combine a high level of academic expertise with excellent teaching skills and a real and deep concern for the wellbeing of each and every student. Taken together, these allow us to recruit and retain the very best teachers.
