Changes to the School Day
|
Following extensive consultation and the pilot of new school day timings throughout 2008/2009, the Governors of Kingsdown School have approved the formalisation of the current timings from September 2009.
Letters informing all parents about this decision were posted prior to the Easter holidays.
The Learning Resource Centre will be available to students who wish to remain on site on each respective Friday until 3.25pm to complete homework and other personalised learning.

Rationale for change:
- To raise standards of teaching and learning.
- To ensure that no curriculum time for students is compromised. Students continue to receive their full curriculum entitlement. We have simply been more creative in how we deliver Personal, Social, Health Education and Citizenship and the previous use of registration time.
- To provide for all, a prompt start to the day. Students now go straight into lesson one and both lateness and students’ focus on their learning has improved.
- A newly introduced electronic system of registration. Students’ attendance is electronically recorded in every lesson and this removed the need for a 5 minute registration with Tutors after lunch and the need for them to register with Tutors at the start of the day.
- PSHE & C delivered in half hour slots rather than an hour. This is now delivered on a Monday at the end of the day, managed by a newly appointed PSHE & C Co-ordinator and there is opportunity for Tutors to consolidate learning with students if they so wish, in Tutor time over the week.
- To provide a greater number of lessons in the morning session and fewer in the afternoon to ensure optimum learning by students. We now have four lessons before lunch and one after with the exception of a Monday when the taught PSHE & C lesson is delivered.
- The school is striving to be ‘outstanding’ in all aspects, at all times and therefore we recognised the need to invest more heavily in the professional development and training of all our staff. This has been provided through the early finish for students on each respective Friday.
