| Life Beyond the Classroom |
|
At Kingsdown, we believe strongly in the development of personal and social skills. A key part of this is through our extensive extra-curricular activities. Students at Kingsdown are given a wealth of opportunities and are actively encouraged to engage in life “Beyond the classroom”. Many clubs are on offer either at lunchtime or after school and as well as social clubs such as Warhammer club, include the full range of sporting activities, open to all students. Our teams are very successful both in the Swindon district and beyond. The Junior Sports Leader Award is offered to Year 10 students after school hours. Year 9 students have the opportunity to visit the Pencelli Outdoor Education Centre for a week of outdoor activities. In Year 10 and 11, students are offered the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme. From September 2007, World Challenge activities are being offered in Year 7 and 8, with the opportunity to fund raise for and then participate in a major expedition in Year 10 and 11. We are very proud of our Recital Evenings where the various ensemble groups and soloists are given the opportunity to showcase their talent. In addition, the annual “Young Musician of the Year” competition is very popular. In addition, students are able to access specialist tuition in a number of musical instruments including wind, brass, strings and percussion. Our drama productions are renowned for their quality and are very popular among students. Educational Visits are very popular at Kingsdown. In Year 7, students are given the opportunity to visit either France or Germany, where over 4 days they can apply their language skills and learn about a different culture. A Spanish club offers keen linguists the chance to further an additional language. In art, students are given the opportunity to visit various galleries in London. All Year 8 students visit @Bristol to enhance a module in Science. These, and the other visits help to bring the curriculum to life. Many social trips are organised for students including annual visits to Thorpe Park and other local attractions such as MegaBowl and Ice Skating. These trips are highly valued by the students and help to create the warm and friendly Kingsdown atmosphere.
