Welcome to science at Kingsdown School. We are a creative and innovative faculty, providing opportunities for students to challenge their ideas about science by linking the science they are learning in the classroom to their lives outside school. We continuously update our science courses to challenge and engage all students of different levels of interest and ability.
We have 8 well equipped science classrooms, with practical work forming an integral part of the curriculum, helping students to explore new ideas and underpin their understanding of scientific concepts. Opportunities for learning outside the classroom are also provided, with the organisation of science field trips and an afterschool STEM club - linking science to the other technology subjects in school.
Key Stage 3
At Key Stage 3 we currently follow the Go Science scheme with an emphasis being placed on linking learning in the classroom to experiences outside the classroom. Assessment is by a mixture of computer based and written exams together with teacher assessed tasks encouraging students to make use of the science they have learnt to complete extended tasks.
We also offer the Science Plus Certificate which promotes teaching and learning of science through everyday situations, and real life applications, for students who struggle with abstract ideas. This scheme can lead to either GCSE gateway science or alternatively BTEC in additional science.
Key Stage 4
At Key Stage 4 we currently follow the Gateway Science curriculum. Within this curriculum students can study either foundation or higher Core Science or pursue a Triple Science Award. Core Science leads to a double GCSE award in science while the Triple Science Award delivers three separate GCSE qualifications in science; Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
We also offer the BTEC – Applied Science from Edexcel which is designed to introduce learners to working in the sector or prepare to them for further study in science.
Our aim is to provide students with a sound basis of scientific knowledge which can be applied to life outside school, whether students continue their studies in science after GCSE, or use their analytical and problem solving skills developed in science to further their studies in their chosen area.
