Learning Support

Kingsdown School aims to meet the individual needs of all students and to ensure that the curriculum is differentiated to help all students be effective learners. Our Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Centre is oversubscribed and Gifted and Talented (G&T) students are recognised and there is a constantly updated register from feeder primary schools and recommendations from teaching staff.

Support is offered in several ways. Students with statements or funding receive in-class support from Teaching Assistants (TAs) and may join the following programmes :

Social Support
We offer Circle Time and a Haven Club for those students who might benefit from social support.

Tutor Time Intervention
Personalised One to One support is provided during tutor time for students requiring additional help in literacy, numeracy, handwriting, keyboard skills or emotional support. The duration of the support and the number of sessions per week will vary depending on the need identified for the students.

Distar
Year 7 and 8 students identified as requiring additional help with reading and comprehension have the opportunity to join the Distar programme, a very successul corrective reading programme operating with small groups of up to 6 students.

Key Steps
The Key Steps programme is a Key Stage 3 programme which allows students to complete a series of challenges and achievements. Key Steps is offered as an alternative for those who may find accessing a foreign language difficult.

ASDAN
The ASDAN Award programmes help students to complete a series of challenges and personal achievements. There is no examination for the ASDAN programmes - awards are teacher assessed with a portfolio submitted for moderation.

Personal Social Development (PSD)
PSD is a nationally recognised certificate where the students collect and combine experiences in and out of school to build a portfolio of evidence and knowledge. The programme can be personalised to the student with topics such as healthy living and eating, managing your own money, making use of leisure time as well as managing social relationships being covered.
