The modern world is constantly evolving and changing and business is taking an increasingly vital role. Business Studies provides the tools and skills for students to succeed in the challenging environment of the modern workplace.

At Kingsdown we offer OCR National Business Level 2. This is an exam-free vocationally related course that takes an engaging practical approach to learning. Students will develop the vital practical and applicable skills needed by today's employers. The qualification suits a very wide range of learning styles because it focuses on on-going assessment.

The Level 2 qualification consists of three units of study, including Units 1, 2 and 4. Students will have 180 guided learning hours and will receive a qualification at the same level as 2 GCSEs grades A* to C.

In Unit 1 — Investigating business, students will learn :

• the various business structures and ownership models used to achieve business aims
• to understand the importance of location and the role/influence of stakeholders
• to study competition in terms of price, product and customer service

In Unit 2 — Enterprise and operations, students will learn :

• how to investigate a business start-up including:
• identifying a market opportunity
• planning and financing new ventures
• understanding the basic systems and infrastructure needed for a successful launch
• how to create business plans, feasibility studies and cash flow projections

In Unit 4 — Communication in business, students will learn :

• practical communication skills used in business — IT and non-IT based, written and verbal
• how to write memos, emails, reports and how to create advertisements
• to prepare and deliver formal presentations
• how ICT is used for business communication

The Business Studies department is situated within the ICT faculty which is dynamic and forward thinking and consistently achieves high standards. Activities will range from the entrepreneurial, to kinaesthetic, to problem solving.
